"Guidelines on maintaining and improving health of emergency workers at the TEPCO Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant" were formulated.

The Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare (MHLW) formulated “guidelines on maintaining and improving the health of emergency workers at the TEPCO Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant”, and made the guidelines public in accordance with the provision in Article 70, paragraph 2 of the Industrial Safety and Health Act in the official gazette.

Summary

  • Now a large number of workers are engaged in tasks to restore the TEPCO Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant from the nuclear accident. The workers should be provided with long-term health care.
  • The MHLW set up “Expert Meeting on the long-term health care of workers at the TEPCO Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant” in June 2011. The expert meeting compiled a report based on discussions in the expert meeting on September 2011.
  • These guidelines, based on the proposals from the report, give suggestions for TEPCO and other relevant contractors regarding how to implement measures for maintaining and improving health of emergency workers in accordance with the provision in Article 70, paragraph 2 item 1 of the Industrial Safety and Health Act.
