3-Aug-2011 The results of the “Survey on Employment Trends, 2010” have now been tabulated and released by the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare. The “Survey on Employment Trends” is carried out to study the characteristics of hired and separated employees in establishments in major industries across Japan, by industry and occupation, as well as by gender, age and reasons for leaving. The survey was conducted in two parts, part 1* was conducted in July covering the period from January to June, and part 2 in January of the following year covering the period from July to December. The results presented here are aggregation of the two survey results compiled as annual totals. *Results of the part 1 survey were published on December 16th, 2010. The survey selected 14,884 establishments employing 5 or more regular employees and received valid responses from 10,420 establishments for part one and 10,125 for part two. 79,576 hired employees and 82,219 separated employees at the responding establishments were tabulated.

1. Accession rate and separation rate

The accession rate was 14.3%, a 1.2 point decrease on the previous year (15.5%), while the separation rate was 14.5%, a 1.9 decrease on the previous year (16.4%). The separation rate has been the greater of the two since 2008.

2. Separation rate by reason for leaving

In terms of reasons for leaving, “personal reasons”, including marriage, child birth and child rearing, long-term care, or other personal reasons, accounted for 9.9%, a 0.7 point decrease on the previous year (10.6%). “Reasons of the establishment”, such as operational circumstances, transfer, and return after a transfer, accounted for 1.4%, a 0.6 point decrease (previous year 2.0%).

3. Wage changes of hired career-changing employees

The proportion of persons with an increased wage after changing career was 29.4%, a 3.7 point increase on the previous year (25.7%). The proportion of persons with a decreased wage was 32.3%, a 2.2 point decrease (previous year 34.5%).
