“Basic Survey on Labour Unions, 2012”

 

Digest of the Summary Report

 

18-Dec-2012 The results of the “Basic Survey on Labour Unions, 2012” have now been tabulated and released by the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare.
This survey is carried out to identify the actual situation of the organization of labour unions including the estimated unionization rate and the distribution of union members by the industry, size of enterprise and their upper-part union. The survey is conducted in July regarding the situation as of June 30 every year, covering all unions.

 

[Key Survey Results]

1. The number of labour union members was 9,892 thousand, a decrease of 68 thousand (0.7%) from 9,961 thousand in the previous year.【Table 1(PDF:378KB)】

2. The estimated unionization rate was 17.9 %, a 0.2 point decrease in the previous year.【Table 1(PDF:378KB)】

3. The number of female union members was 2,990 thousand, an increase of 31 thousand (1.1%) from 2,958 thousand in the previous year.
Their estimated unionization rate was 12.6 %.【Table 1(PDF:378KB)】

4. The number of union members who are part-time employees was 837 thousand, an increase of 61 thousand from 776 thousand in the previous year. Its share in the overall number of union members increased 0.7 points to 8.5%.
Their estimated unionization rate was 6.3 %.
Both of these are the highest figures since 1990 when these survey items were added. 【Table 5(PDF:313KB)】

Note: Figure for the estimated unionization rate for 2011 are used the numbers from “Supplementary-estimated figures for Labour Force Survey in 2011 due to the Great East Japan Earthquake” by Statistics Bureau, Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications.
