- In this section, the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare(MHLW) explains various matters concerning foods and food additives produced by recombinant DNA techniques, especially about MHLW safety assessment system on foods and food additives produced by recombinant DNA techniques.

- MHLW has introduced mandatory requirement for safety assessment of foods and food additives produced by recombinant DNA techniques adding new provisions to the "Specifications and Standards for Foods, Food Additives and Other Related Products".In this section, the MHLW Announcements published in May, 2000 and other related texts are available. For supplemental reference, "Report on Mandatory Requirement for Safety Assessment of Foods and Food Additives Produced by Recombinant DNA Techniques" (Subcommittee on Biotechnology, Food Safety Investigation Council, 21 January 2000) is available.
- Section 5. Labelling System of Foods and Food Additives Produced by Recombinant DNA Techniques
- The Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries has decided to introduce mandatory labelling system of foods and food additives produced by recombinant DNA techniques in view of consumers' choice under the amended Law Concerning Standardization and Proper Labelling of Agriculture and Forestry Products (JAS Law) .On the other hand, the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare requested the Food Safety Investigation Council to discuss the necessity for labelling of foods and food additives produced by recombinant DNA techniques in view of public health. Discussion at the Subcommittee on Food Labelling is still underway to decide appropriate measures for the labelling under the Food Sanitation Law. (Relevant documents are not available here.)
- Section 7. Codex Ad Hoc Intergovernmental Task Force on Foods Derived from Biotechnology
- "Codex Ad Hoc Intergovernmental Task Force on Foods Derived from Biotechnology" was established to develop international standards, guidelines or other recommendations on foods derived from biotechnology. The establishment of the Task Force was decided at the 23rd Session of the Joint FAO/WHO Codex Alimentarius Commission held in Rome from 28 June to 3 July 1999.
