“Basic Survey on Labour Unions, 2010”

 

Digest of the Summary Report

 

- The estimated unionization rate maintained the level of the previous year at 18.5% -

 

14-Dec-2010 The results of the “Basic Survey on Labour Unions, 2010” have now been tabulated and released by the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare.
This survey is carried out to identify the actual situation of the organization of labour unions including the estimated unionization rate and the distribution of union members by the industry, size of enterprise and their upper-part union. The survey is conducted in July regarding the situation as of June 30 every year, covering all unions.

 

[Key Survey Results]

1. The number of labour union members was 10,054 thousand, a decrease of 24 thousand from 10,078 thousand in the previous year.【Table 1(PDF:379KB)】

2. The estimated unionization rate was 18.5 %, remaining at the same level of the previous year.【Table 1(PDF:379KB)】

3. The number of female union members was 2,964 thousand, an increase of 31 thousand from 2,933 thousand in the previous year, which made it an increase for 5 consecutive years.
Their estimated unionization rate was 12.8 %, a 0.1 point increase from 12.7% in the previous year.【Table 1(PDF:379KB)】

4. The number of union members who are part-time employees was 726 thousand, an increase of 26 thousand from 700 thousand in the previous year. Its share in the overall number of union members increased 0.3 points to 7.3%.
The estimated unionization rate was 5.6 %, a 0.3 point increase from 5.3% in the previous year.
Both of these are the highest figures since 1990 when these survey items were added. 【Table 5(PDF:370KB)】
