Definition of Terms

(1)   "Families living together" do not include the following;
1   Those who are absent from home over an extensive period (3 months or longer)
2   Those who are now absent from home, and whose absence over a long period is observed.
However those periodically returning to home in above 1, 2 are regarded as families living together.

(2)   Number of siblings
Number of brother(s) and/or sister(s) who are living together with the subject child
When the subject child is one of a twin, the number of siblings is counted as "two", and that for triplets are counted as "three" likewise. (This survey included no quadruplets).

(3)   Combination of family members living together
  Living with parents
    With parents, or with parents and siblings
    With parents only = the subject child + father + mother
    With parents and siblings = the subject child + father + mother + sibling(s)
    With parents and grandparents
    With parents and grandparent(s) on the mother's side = the subject child + father + mother + grandfather and/or grandmother on the mother's side (+ sibling(s)) (+ other family member(s))
    With parents and grandparent(s) on the father's side = the subject child + father + mother + grandfather and/or grandmother on the father's side (+ sibling(s)) (+ other family member(s))
    With parents and grandparent(s) = the subject child + father + mother + grandparent(s) on the father's and mother's sides (+ sibling(s)) (+ other family member(s))
    With parents and others = the subject child + father + mother + other family members living together (other than grandparents) (+ sibling(s))
    With single parent
    With mother only, or with mother and sibling(s) = the subject child + mother (+ sibling(s))
    With mother and grandparents, etc. = the subject child + mother + grandfather or grandmother, or other family members living together (+ sibling(s))
    With father only, or with father and sibling(s) = the subject child + father (+ sibling(s))
    With father and grandparents, etc. = the subject child + father + grandfather or grandmother, or other family members living together (+ sibling(s))
    Others = those who live apart from both mother and father

(4)   Employed (including leaves such as childcare leave)
First Survey, Second Survey   Salaried work, self-employed or family work, side job, and other work
Third Survey   Those with work followed by income, or working with intention of receiving income

(5)   Occupation
"Professional or technical work" = Researchers, technicians, healthcare workers, social welfare workers, legal stuff, experts in management, teachers, novelists, reporters, designers, tutors, librarians, interpreters, administrative scriveners, etc.

"Managerial work" = Managerial public officers, company or organization executives, etc.

"Desk work" = General clerk/workers, outside clerk/workers, workers engaged in transportation/communication

"Sales work" = sales workers, quasi-sales workers (such as traveling salespersons)

"Service work" = service workers to support domestic works (home helpers, babysitters, etc.), hygienic service workers (hairdressers, beauticians, etc.), licensed cooks, entertainment workers, waiters/waitresses, housing and building maintenance workers

"Security service work" = security service workers (Self Defense Forces personnel, policemen, security guards, etc.)

"Agriculture, forestry and fisheries" = agricultural workers, forestry workers, fishery workers

"Transportation and communication" = Drivers, conductors, communication service workers, etc.

"Product processing/manufacturing" = Various manufacturing workers, etc.

(6)   Usual caregivers
Those who take care of the subject child regardless of hours on daily basis
    Nursery school teachers = including nursery teachers of unauthorized facilities such as a "baby hotel" as well as authorized nursery schools.
    Nursery mothers ("home welfare worker", "nursery room at home") = a collective name for those authorized by local governments in order to take care of a small number of infants at home.
    Baby sitters = those who visit infant home for giving care

(7)   City areas (based on the subject child's address as of the survey)
(January-born: Surveyed in August, 2003; July-born: surveyed in February, 2004)

All wards of Tokyo, Sapporo, Sendai, Saitama, Chiba, Yokohama, Kawasaki, Nagoya, Kyoto, Osaka, Kobe, Hiroshima, Kitakyushu, Fukuoka

Areas excluding the above 14 major cities and other cities

(8)   Main caregivers in the day
The person(s) spending the longest weekday daytime hours caring for the child.

(9)   Combination of caregivers
Usual combination of caregivers
    Grandparents and others = One of the (grandmother, grandfather, or others) or more
    Nursery school teachers = One of the (nursery school teacher, nursery mother, or babysitter) or more

(10)   Children's obesity
Kaup index was applied to the subject children for categorization.
Kaup index = weight (g) / (height (cm) x height (cm) ) x 10
Note: Calculated only when their weight and height data were available.
    Slightly underweight= 14 or less
    Normal = 15 - 17
    Slightly obese = 18 or more

(11)   Attitudes towards child rearing (Satisfaction of child rearing, etc.)
Answers to "Advantages of child rearing", "How do you want your kids to grow up?" and "burdens of child rearing" were collected from the subjects born in January or July 2001.
