(5) Child-Rearing Expenditures

Child-rearing expenditures have been on the increase.

In the breakdown of the monthly child-rearing expenditure, “40 thousand yen” accounted for 22.6%, “30 thousand yen” 20.0% and “50 thousand yen” 19.8%.

With regard to the changes from the time of the 4th survey, the proportion of respondents with “20 thousand yen” or less decreased and that with “30 thousand yen” or more increased (Figure 20).

As for the proportion of respondents who replied “financial burdens” to burdens and worries concerning child rearing according to the monthly child-rearing expenditure in the 6th survey, “60 thousand yen” accounted for 52.6% and “65 thousand yen” 53.0%, showing that the higher the expenditure becomes, the larger the proportion becomes (Figure 21).

Concerning monthly child-care fee and tuition fee for nursery school or kindergarten, “20,000 yen to under 30,000 yen” accounted for the largest proportion of 40.1%. Comparing with the 4th survey, the proportion of “no child-care fee and tuition fee” decreased from about 40% to 3.1% in the 6th survey (Figure 22).

In the breakdown of monthly expenses for lessons, the largest proportion was 24.3% for “5,000 yen to under 10,000 yen”, followed by 16.1% for “10,000 yen to under 20,000 yen”. According to this breakdown in relation to the monthly child-rearing expenditure, there is a tendency that the higher the child-rearing expenditure becomes, the larger the expenses for paid lessons become (Figure 23).
